New asbestos cases expected in Libby

A newly released report conducted by doctors in Libby says that more residents there will develop lung disease from exposure to asbestos in the community and its surrounding area.

Doctors Brad Black and Alan Whitehouse worked with scientists from Detroit and New York City on the study, which looked at Mesothelioma in Libby, and focused on 11 cases that had not been reported before.

None of those people worked at the W.R. Grace vermiculite mine and the doctors say they probably were exposed to low levels of asbestos in the town in areas close to Grace's mine or processing plants, or along railroad tracks.

They also say Libby can expect an epidemic of the lung disease over the next 20 years because of that low-level exposure.

The doctors' findings were published on-line by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine and the journal's web site indicates that the report will be included in the next printed edition.
